JOB SUMMARY

The Associate Vice President and Chief Operations Officer, University Hospitals is a key senior management position and serves as a member of the UT Southwestern University Hospital senior executive leadership team. The AVP and COO, University Hospital is responsible for the operations of the University Hospital and Zale Lipshy Pavilion, ensuring efficient services that are designed to provide the highest standards of quality care and service to patients and their families, in addition to meeting the needs of physicians and other providers, public, and staff. Reporting to the University Hospital Chief Executive Officer, the University Hospital COO will work collaboratively with the Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Ambulatory COO, and Medical Group COO to integrate the strategic plan of the organization with the operations and provide management oversight for the development of high‑quality, cost‑effective, and integrated clinical programs within the hospital. The COO is also responsible for ensuring cost management across the operational areas of the hospital to ensure continued investments are able to be made into the organization ongoing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Job Duties

  • Has direct leadership responsibility for all components of hospital operations, including both clinical and non‑clinical support services, hospital‑based supply chain activities, and facility management.
  • Effectively manage the provision of inpatient diagnostic services at all UT Southwestern Health System sites of service, including imaging and pharmacy services.
  • Create an environment that supports patient, physician and employee satisfaction, improved service and quality.
  • In partnership with the Health System AVP of Accreditation and Policy, ensures that all University Hospital services are compliant with The Joint Commission, CMS, and all other regulatory requirements.
  • Works collaboratively with the Chief Financial Officer and other executive leaders to optimize productivity, efficiency and service throughout all aspects of hospital operations.
  • Ensures effective systems, processes and performance management arrangements are in place to deliver high standards of performance and the quality of patient services.
  • Plans and ensures robust demand and capacity plans are in place to deliver the anticipated levels of activity and the potential demands of emergency activity.
  • Drives service development, standardization and innovation across the hospital departments, promoting a culture of continuous service improvement.
  • Provide strong leadership, direction and assistance in setting strategy with clearly defined expectations. Leads the ongoing development of progressive physician/hospital strategies and execute plans to optimize the long‑term potential of both hospitals and the Medical Center.
  • Partner with medical staff, peer leaders and hospital staff to foster an environment focused on the quality and efficiency of care.
  • Ensure hospital departments meet their financial objectives and cost improvement targets, and contribute effectively to the annual budget planning and the development of business plans.
  • Function as a respected leader and decision maker.
  • Support, develop and mentor staff members, ensuring their professional development and ability to contribute to the success and culture of the organization.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

Required

  • Education Master's Degree Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Public Health or other relevant field.
  • Experience 10 years operational leadership in a healthcare setting characterized by progressively expanding scope and responsibility in a senior operations position with an Academic Affiliated Hospital/Medical Center or large Teaching Hospital.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to act as a liaison, between the administrative and medical staffs, various Boards and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to lead committees, task forces and other multi‑disciplinary work groups.
  • An open, honest direct communicator who is able to cascade this style through his/her departments.
  • An understanding of information systems as they pertain to electronic medical records, accounting, decision support, cost management and revenue enhancement.
  • Decisive leader with the ability to understand physician's viewpoints and needs, work strategically in the best interest of patients, the hospital and other key stakeholders. A strong reputation for sustained, inclusive, trust‑based physician relations.
  • Demonstrated ability to delegate to others effectively, hold them accountable, demand excellence and timely performance in a positive but assertive style.
  • Demonstrated success in leading process or performance improvement initiatives preferably using lean sigma or a similar process in a teaching or academic hospital environment.
  • Experience dealing with complex management structures similar to that of a medical school, affiliated hospital and additional business entities attached to either.
  • Experienced at building a culture of teamwork.
  • Goal oriented individual who is fair‑minded, intelligent and able to garner respect and manage by influence.
  • High level of complex problem solving abilities both in groups and one‑on‑one situations.
  • Highly developed expertise in quantitative analysis to support definition and advancement for UT Southwestern's goals.
  • Proven success in balancing cost and quality issues while partnering with the medical staff to address productivity improvements.
  • The ability to maximize revenue potential in a thoughtful manner, cognizant of potential compliance issue.
